From The Gloucester Rose - August 2007 |
Gloucester MP Parmjit Dhanda joined postal workers from across the country to protest against Royal Mail's plans to close the city's sorting office. Hundreds of post office staff and members of the Communication Worker's Union marched through the city centre voicing their opposition tot he proposed closure of the Eastern Avenue site. The mail centre is part of Gloucester's heritage and history. Local residents, staff and the trade unions have been backed by both local MPs David Drew in Stroud and City MP Parmjit Dhanda. Campaigners believe that Royal Mail's plans to move operations 34 miles away to the Swindon Mail Centre would put 400 postal workers' jobs at risk, needlessly send local mail out of our City, and cause unnecessary pollution.
